LEDs are a “directional” light source, meaning they emit light in only one direction. As a result, LED lighting can use light and energy more efficiently in a variety of applications. LED lighting products have a longer useful life than other light sources, such as incandescent or CFL. This is because LEDs rarely “burn out” or fail. Instead, they suffer from lumen depreciation, in which the amount of light produced decreases and the color appearance of the light changes over time. Instead of basing an LED product’s useful life on the time it takes for 50% of a large group of lamps to burn out (as s the case with traditional sources), the “lifetime” of an LED product is determined by predicting when the light output will drop by 30%.
